Originally from Birmingham, Lauren Royall is a multidisciplinary artist based in Leeds studying Fine Art with Contemporary Cultural Theory at University of Leeds. Her practice pushes the potentials of materials through painterly processes, exploring ephemerality through a fascination with fragility and translucency. The material itself informs the process. She investigates the concept of breaking and how this potential is ever-present physically within inanimate objects. Royall approaches each piece without knowing if it will stay intact; work might be expanded through reshaping, reforming or destroying; her process is a blur of frenzied movement which is grounded by a specific photographic memory.
Considering intimacy in all its forms and fleeting moments of human interaction, Lauren Royall is guided by a deep sense of pareidolia, dancing in the interplay of abstraction and figuration, exploring the straddling of the two. By balancing harshness with softness, she explores themes in the taboo arena of sex and love. Royall's tacticity is one of tenderness and violence. It toes a line that isn’t there.
Additionally, Lauren Royall is an activist who utilises creative approaches to support victims/survivors of sexual violence. She runs classes where creating is utilised as art therapy, opening up conversations and bringing together groups/communities. Royall’s passion to support and create change through education and activism acts as a big driver for her practice.
